What’s it all about?

Sharks preserved in formaldehyde, celebrities with paper bags over their heads, empty galleries, a merry-go-round. Sometime the question isn’t so much ‘what is contemporary art’ but ‘what isn’t’. This class presents an introduction to contemporary art, teaching strategies for learning to understand and appreciate contemporary art in a playful, non judgemental and welcoming environment. If you’ve always wanted to ‘get it’, this class is for you.

What will we cover?

We will be considering the origins of contemporary art, and surveying the current field of contemporary practice. Through themes like ‘the artist’s body’, ‘the digital’, and ‘the exhibition’ this class will talk through dominant themes of contemporary practice, whilst providing examples, and taking you through visual analysis strategies, through exercises and group work.
