Step into the expansive world of science fiction and learn fundamental tools in world building to begin creating your own sci-fi universe.
What will we cover?
This workshop will introduce you to key sci-fi worldbuilding elements. Each section is paired with a writing exercise, so you can put the concepts into practice straight away:
1. What is the core premise that drives the narrative? It is important to establish a clear theme, as this will ultimately shape how you build your world.
2. What parts of society and culture have changed as a result? Here is your chance to get detail specific – environment and setting, infrastructure, political and societal hierarchies, resources, and more.
3. Equipped with this information, you will write a short piece about a character who is part of this world, and how they are impacted by your central premise.
Materials:
– Writing device, be it a laptop or a notebook and pen.
– It will help to have an interest or knowledge base in sci-fi, as I will not be able to cover the genre’s themes and elements in this workshop.
– A curious and open mind.

Who will be teaching?
Dante Harper (they/it) is a recent Creative Writing and Neuroscience graduate. They specialise in the short story form, utilising technique at the level of the sentence to enunciate a protagonist’s internal experience to critique current sociocultural and political issues across genres such as speculative & science fiction, dirty realism, and literary realism.
