In this fun and easy class, Emilie will teach you how to combine blockprint and watercolour to create beautiful illustrations.
This is primarily a watercolour class and an opportunity to learn some basics skills in painting, including colour mixing and colour palette design.
We’ll be focusing on our beautiful Australian native birds as inspiration.
Birds are a wonderful motif for stamp design, as it’s easy to create the texture of the feathers and gorgeous plumage! And the watercolour will allow us to render the beautiful colours of native birds!
All materials provided. Just come and have a wonderful time!
What will we cover?
Using stamps carved by Emilie (or your own if you attend the ‘Australian Bird Stamps’ class), you will learn to use fine art ink pads to create your prints. The oil-based ink will allow you to then work on your design with watercolour to bring some colour and life to your illustrations!
We’ll then learn tips to create a colour palette inspired by birds plumage. Emilie will guide you step by step into completing a beautiful, colourful, bird illustration.

Who will be teaching?
Emilie (she/her) is an artist and educator based between Melbourne and Marseille (Fr), working across media with a focus on community-based practice and education. She graduated from her PhD in Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2020 and has been an art resident at Testing Grounds (2020), Making Space (2021) and the Comic Art Workshop (2021).
Emilie has exhibited her works at FortyFive Downstairs gallery, the Abbotsford convent, No Vacancy Gallery, Arcade and George Patton Gallery.
In 2021, Emilie opened Couleur in Collingwood, a printmaking studio focusing on DIY, hand-prints, and experimental printmaking. Since 2023, Couleur Studio has relocated in South of France. Emilie is also a comic book artist and her illustration has been published by the Lifted Brow and she self-published her first graphic novel in 2018 with Tree Paper Comics in Melbourne. In 2023 she is running Glow Comics Trails festival with Laneway Learning, celebrating Melbourne’s booming comics scene.
