Maps can turn rows of data into clear and engaging visual stories. In this beginner-friendly class, participants will learn how to create an effective map using Datawrapper—no coding or previous data visualisation experience required.
Through a practical, step-by-step activity, participants will transform a simple dataset into a polished map that can be shared online or included in a presentation, article or report.
What will we cover?
We will begin by looking at examples of maps and discussing what makes them clear, informative and visually appealing.
Participants will then be introduced to Datawrapper and learn how to:
● Choose an appropriate map type for their data
● Prepare and upload a simple dataset
● Match data to geographic locations
● Use colours, labels, legends and tooltips effectively
● Add a title, description and source information
● Check a map for clarity, accessibility and accuracy
● Publish and share a finished interactive map
Most of the class will be hands-on, with participants creating their own map by following a guided example. We will finish by reviewing the completed maps and discussing how participants can use mapping in their own data stories, reports and projects.
What will I need?
Participants will need:
● A laptop or desktop computer
● A stable internet connection
● A modern web browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari
● A free Datawrapper account
No coding, mapping or data visualisation experience is required.
