Please note: Please bring an item to dye and a plastic bag to take it home in (you will be taking home your item still wet with dye). A plain white (or off-white) cotton or linen t-shirt or tea towel is recommended.

What’s it all about?

Tie-dye took the western world by storm in the 1960s with bright, bold patterns fit for Woodstock. Since then, many different sub-styles have emerged. Modern designs often focus on simpler, monochrome designs, and traditional techniques, such as the Japanese shibori, still hold strong.

We’ll learn how to tie-dye and then get creative – be as hippy or as contemporary as you like!

What will we cover?

We will learn the basics of tie-dye techniques, including how to make different patterns such as spirals, mandalas and stripes, how to apply the dye and how to care for your items afterwards.

We will get hands-on and will dye our own items in class.

Who will be teaching?

Lucie in a box

Lucie Bradley is a scientist, communicator and general tinkerer who loves fixing, altering and updating clothes to personalise pieces and get new life out of existing items. She first dabbled with tie-dye as a teenager and has experimented with bright 1960s style patterns, rainbows and more contemporary designs.
