What’s it all about?
Ever been at a party or club; you’re really getting into the music and you’re there with some friends or a partner and you wanted to dance… you know… with someone? Like, spinning and twirling, stuff you see in old movies that looks like heaps of fun? But then you try it and it’s just a series of miscommunications between you and your partner and half the time you’re just trying not to fall over. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could take a short class and learn all the skills you need to dance with someone, with all the sweet moves and none of the confusion? Well, you’ve come to the right place – find yourself a partner (or come by yourself and make a new friend!)
What will we cover?
In this class, you will learn all the basics for doing cool spins and dips to any music, whether with just a friend or someone more than that. We’ll cover a few different tempos and music styles, so you can know how to vary it up according to the atmosphere. Aspects of body control, balance, posture and partner dancing dos and don’ts will be covered, so you can best shake that thing, and most importantly, we will cover some elements of muscle control so you can better communicate with your partner, and from this, start experimenting and eventually create your own moves!
Who will be teaching?
Stephanie is a long time swing dancer, and became casually obsessed with the style due to its focus on improvisation, creativity and intense partner communication. She has long thought that there is no reason why people can’t partner dance to modern music, and frequently does so at swing dance parties, when the DJ starts getting creative at late night parties. Being a professional nerd, she loves the technical aspects of partner dancing, and loves nothing more than long conversations into the night about dance drills, how to communicate moves, and the concept of frame. Even though she hates the word frame. Seriously. Don’t bring it up.
