What’s it all about?

Did Romans wear togas all the time? What did they eat during their banquets? And can I really go and visit the brothel at Pompeii?!

In this class you will learn lots of interesting information about how the Romans lived, worked and died. We’ll use the buried-in-time city of Pompeii as our gateway into everyday Roman life, and we’ll learn the answers to all of these questions and more!

What will we cover?

We’ll don our archaeological hats and see what we can learn about ancient Roman life from the ruins of Pompeii and its fellow Vesuvian victim Herculaneum. You’ll try your hand at reconstructing a Roman mosaic, learn a few Latin terms with which to impress your friends, and take home a couple of Roman recipes.

We’ll also get some travel tips so you can get the best out of any future trips to Pompeii! You’ll leave the class with a great broad knowledge of Roman culture and a sense that, in many ways, the Romans weren’t all that different to us.

Who will be teaching?

Avalon pictureAvalon has a Bachelor of Arts in History, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Classical Studies and Archaeology from the University of Melbourne. After deciding that she wasn’t nerdy enough, she decided to learn Latin. In her spare time she reads whodunits, but never guesses the murderer.
