What’s it all about?

William Shakespeare died in 1616, but his plays continue to be performed to sellout audiences, and his plots are regularly reimagined on the big screen. What is it about the Bard of Avon and his work that continues to enthrall audiences 400 years after his death?

Come along and learn about Shakespeare’s life and influences! There’s more to it than what you were taught at school, did you know both his date of birth and date of death was 23 April?

What will we cover?

We’ll start of with the basics and get an overview of his work. Decide if Romeo and Juliet is a romance or a tragedy, and if Macbeth really is the cursed play. Then we will find out what the difference is between a soliloquy and a sonnet, and choose our favourite Shakespeare conspiracy theories.

Finally, we’ll bring it all together by reimagining a bit of Shakespeare. We’ll leave this class knowing our comedy from our drama, and maybe even be inspired to write some sonnets of our own!

Who will be teaching:

Jess has been a proud bookworm since the age of three, and developed a particular interest in Gothic literature during her Bachelor of Arts (English) degree. She followed up with a Master of Publishing & Communications and is currently working in publishing.
