What’s it all about?

Want to impress your mates by making your own tasty beer?

Want to reduce how much you spend on beer?

Want to know more about what goes into beer?

Want to drink beer?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, come and learn how to brew your own beer!

What will we cover?

In the class we will cover:

  • Home brewing basics, with an emphasis on how to brew a ‘mini-mash’ or ‘all grain’ (not from a kit).
  • How to get started brewing: What you’ll need, where to get it and what you need to know so that it doesn’t explode.
  • How to brew ales will be the focus (because they are the easiest beers to make in Mebourne’s climate), with a little bit about lagers and the difference between them.
  • A discussion of a few common styles of beer and the difference in characteristics.

All this combined with a bit of Jacob’s home-brewed beer to sip on during the class! Yum.

Who will be teaching?

Screen shot 2012-04-30 at 10.42.40 PMJacob McElwee has been brewing for quite a few years now and his beers are well-regarded among peers and by his beer-snob girlfriend, Lorelei Schmitt. Lorelei loves beer so much that she taught Jacob how to home brew to ensure ‘beer security’ for their relationship into the future and she will be there too. Together they will make sure you don’t get lost in a maze of malts, hops, temperatures and chemistry-like stuff (it’s really not that hard though).
