Epigenetics is a rapidly evolving scientific field that seeks to understand how our lifestyle choices and the environment, affect our DNA and the performance of our genetic material.
Most people would agree that the foods we choose to eat have a significant impact in our health and long-term wellbeing.
Interestingly, recent studies suggest that it may be through changes to the DNA that different fruits, vegetables and other food choices may affect the stability and structure of the DNA inside the cells in our body!
In this hands-on class, you will sample and learn how to cook different recipes and beverages that contain bioactive food components known to have ‘an epigenetic effect on the DNA’.
You will get the chance to design your own ‘epigenetic menu’ and learn what food combinations you can make to boost the performance of your genes.
What will we cover?
In this workshop you will:
- Learn about types of bioactive food components with epigenetic protective potential
- Sample different types of food recipes and beverages with potential epigenetic action
- Design an epigenetic menu tailored to boost different genes in the DNA.
Who will be teaching?
Pamela is a PhD trained biomedical engineer who loves food, science and books. At the end of 2017, she decided to expand her career prospects and embarked on a steep learning journey to become a qualified Math and Science secondary teacher, completing a Master of Teaching in Math and Science by the end of 2019. At Laneway learning, Pamela teaches a range of science and math classes, including epigenetics, South American drinking tour and the molecular kitchen.
