What’s it all about?

Ever wondered how beer was made? Not just the processes but what is actually happening? What about the different spirits?

From beer and wine, to gin and whisky; from fermentation to distillation – all the science will be revealed. You might even be tempted to have a swift one while soaking up the knowledge.

What will we cover?

We will be looking at the major processes in the production of different drinks and taking a look at the science. We will start off with the different methods of extraction but soon get onto some biology – talking about enzymes and how they work. We will also talk about sanitation and why it is so important in all alcoholic drink making and when we get onto distilling you might even find yourself learning some organic chemistry (don’t worry, nothing too crazy!).

Next time you are at the bar don’t forget to tell all your mates about how the stuff in their glasses was made.

Who will be teaching?

Mark GregoryMark Gregory recently completed his PhD in the field of chemistry at the University of Melbourne. When he is not mixing chemicals in the lab he is running Laneway Learning, playing rugby and making his own beer at home. Delicious!
