What’s it all about?

Never seen a ballet but want to know what all the fuss is about? Seen one ‘Swan Lake’ and assumed you’ve seen them all? Or are you a ballet-goer who’s never quite understood why people say certain ballets, companies, dancers or steps are more impressive, challenging or special than others? This class will give you an insider’s look at the art form, improve your understanding and help you watch a ballet with clearer and more informed eyes.

What will we cover?

This class will cover some basic history and essential facts about ballet’s most famous companies and dancers. The main focus will be looking at different dancers – from different companies, countries, techniques and training backgrounds — interpret classic repertoire. We’ll pick apart the different things to look for when watching a professional ballet dancer perform, so you can have a greater understanding and be able to make more informed judgments when you next go to see a ballet. You’ll be able to understand what those balletomanes are talking about when they rave about Sylvie Guillem’s feet, Tamara Rojo’s fouettes and Svetlana Zakharova’s extensions, and be able to throw your own opinion into the mix.
