What’s it all about?

Coding isn’t a scary word! And computer programming is not just a vocational skill– it can be creative, accessible, practical, and fun! Come along and learn how to code by doing it for yourself!

In this workshop we’ll get you hands on and working with basic code as we learn how to create a program using the beginner-friendly program Python. 

Come and learn the basics by working on an interesting project in a supportive workshop.

This class supports absolute beginners!

What will we cover?

In this interactive class, you’ll learn about coding from someone who’s passionate about supporting communities to love computer technologies! We’ll cover:

  • What is programming and how to use it in our daily lives
  • An introduction to Python and why it’s great for beginners
  • The fundamentals of coding – data structures, functions, libraries, debugging, algorithms
  • How to apply these practically in a project where we scrape YouTube data
  • A glossary and explanation of terms and meanings

    What do I need to bring?

    You will need to bring:

    • Your laptop and charger! Let us know if you don’t have a laptop of you’re own
    • Ideally have Python and Jupyter Notebook installed. Instructions via the links, but let us know if you need a hand.


    Who will be teaching?

    Alind Vats (he/him) is a programmer with 8+ years of coding experience. He studied computer and data science at university and honed his skills working as a Software Engineer and Data Scientist.

    He believes programming is more than a marketable, vocational skill – it has practical applications and is something that everyone can do.

    Besides programming, he likes to write about science, technology, and society, read non-fiction, make and listen to hip-hop music, watch comedies, fence, meditate, and do improv. You can find his writings at alindvats.com
