What’s it all about?

Spices and herbs add to flavors, colors, textures and smells to our foods, they carry the heritage of faraway cultures and times, and provide us with much-needed grandma remedies (and some scientific ones too!). We tend to stick to the few reliable ones we know and love, but our taste-buds can relish in new spices and herbs to discover.

What will we cover?

We’ve picked our favorite spices and herbs not commonly used in Australia, but easy to find in Melbourne. We’ll talk about their varied uses, interesting tradition and cultural significance, and get some practical action going with exotic drinks and dips made from a few selected spices. To top it all off, we’ll send you home with a list of our favorite places to buy spices in Melbourne, so your pantry will never look the same again.

Who will be teaching?

Sivan Kohn and Lee Gal love discovering new flavors and spices, as well as share the many spices they grew up cooking with while living in Israel.

Sivan Kohn is a health scientist who loves to teach at Laneway Learning (about making sense of food labels, food additives and food marketing). You can follow her food labeling and health tips on Facebook and instagram/twitter at @buzzbiomedical.

Lee Gal is a student of naturopathy who is passionate about cooking, and especially cooking from scratch. As a student of Naturopathy, she also follows the current research on the health properties of her favorite spices! You can follow her well-being food blog Naturalee or on instagram @livenaturalee.
