Laneway Learning is running Glow Comics Trails, a celebration of Melbourne Comics artists in the city! 6 artists have been commissioned to write a mini comics about Melbourne after dark, and the panels have been pasted-up across the city, creating a trail for you to walk and reconstitute the stories. Each comic even has a glow-in-the-dark hidden element for you to find after dark!
As part of this event, Dr. Emilie Walsh is offering a very special continued education workshop on glow in the dark pigments! This will be a one-off workshop designed for artists of any kind or any interested people to explore mixing their own glow in the dark pigments to use in different mediums.
Dr Emilie Walsh has been using glow-in-the-dark pigment in her fine arts practice since 2018, as part of her PhD research. She has used glow-in-the- dark paint most notably in her solo show ‘Glowry’, at Fourtyfive Downstairs Gallery in Melbourne in 2020. A smaller iteration of ‘Glowry’, ‘Glowry box’, has been shortlisted for the Emerging Artist Awards by Fortyfive Downstairs Gallery in 2019.
She has also explore the variety of colour palette that can be achieve by glow- in-the-dark pigments for the public art sculpture program for the Royal Children Hospital Art Trail, Uoouoo, creating a unique glow-in-the-dark creature, revealing some hidden secrets.
Emilie has developed her own recipe to mix glow-in-the-dark pigment with various paints and ink, including specifically for printmaking. As a public program and engagement for her solo show Glowry in 2020, Emilie offered a unique glow-in-the-dark printmaking workshop for the general public and has offered Neon painting classes at Laneway Learning in relation to the Uoouoo sculpture launch.

Who will be teaching?
Emilie (she/her) is an artist and educator based
between Melbourne and Marseille (Fr), working across media with a focus
on community-based practice and education. She graduated from her PhD in
Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2020 and has been an
art resident at Testing Grounds (2020), Making Space (2021) and the
Comic Art Workshop (2021).
Emilie has exhibited her works at FortyFive Downstairs gallery, the
Abbotsford convent, No Vacancy Gallery, Arcade and George Patton
Gallery.
In 2021, Emilie opened Couleur in Collingwood, a printmaking studio focusing on DIY, hand-prints, and experimental printmaking. Since 2023, Couleur Studio
has relocated in South of France. Emilie is also a comic book artist
and her illustration has been published by the Lifted Brow and she
self-published her first graphic novel in 2018 with Tree Paper Comics in
Melbourne. In 2023 she is running Glow Comics Trails festival with
Laneway Learning, celebrating Melbourne’s booming comics scene.
