THIS CLASS IS PART OF MELBOURNE FASHION FESTIVAL’S FASHION CULTURE PROGRAM
Knitting remains a fun and useful skill across the ages – whether it’s a beginner’s scarf, a cosy blanket or complex garments. But knitting isn’t only for the winter months, and it’s for more than just warm woollen creations.
Our knitting teacher, Clare, has turned her attention to vegan plant-based fibres and yarns to create lighter pieces for sunny times.
Plant fibres come in such a variety of textures, weights and colour palettes. You might have worked with cotton, but have you tried the deliciously silky banana yarn? Or Ramie, made from nettle fibres?
This class is suitable for complete beginners and those who have had a go and need some tips and encouragement.
Learn about techniques, patterns and alternative fibres you can use to make knits to wear in all seasons. Keep your hands busy and focus your mind while learning with others.
All materials and tools provided.

Who will be Teaching?
Clare (she/her) has been making and mending clothing since the 90s. An avid knitter, Clare learned from “Grandma YouTube” and lots and lots of practice having rediscovered the joy during 2020.
She has an enthusiastic, well rounded and playful teaching style and a 100% success rate so far in teaching others to start knitting or knit better with old-school skill sharing in person.
Clare has knitted with cotton, t-shirt yarn, acrylic blends and plaited rope made from sheets. She much prefers ethical wool yarn and can be found knitting and listening to podcasts from Shetland.
You can follow some of her crafty pursuits on her instagram.
