What’s it all about?

Understood by most people regardless of their language or culture, maps have always been used as a way to communicate what is known about the world. Generally depicting geographic information, they can not only chart the boundaries of our world, but also of our minds, of our imagination, of our emotions.

By using symbols and codes that started to develop thousands of years ago, you will explore your own personal journey, by drawing an imaginary map around the theme of your choice (feel free to bring your ideas to the class, or get inspired on the day).

What will we cover?

We will start by looking for inspiration in famous maps and charts, real or imaginary, and explore their highly symbolic nature. We will discuss different ways in which abstract concepts can be mapped, by borrowing the codes of traditional cartography.

You will then choose a theme: it could be an emotion you wish to explore, a memory you’d like to revisit, a particular experience or journey…

The second part of the class will be spent drawing your map and its various elements, before inking it. No previous experience is needed: it can be as simple or as complex as you wish!

What will you need?

Paper – ideally heavier weight 200gsm of more-  but whatever you have on hand will do

Drawing materials – whatever you have from the below

  • Bottle(s) of ink (can be black or coloured)  & nib holders and nibs  (if you have them)
  • Brushes
  • Black or coloured markers (they can also be all different)
  • Glass with water to dilute the ink
  • Paper towels to clean the nibs

Who will be teaching?

At age four, Amandine Thomas announced to a bewildered family that she would become a children’s book illustrator, and grew up writing short stories that she illustrated and compiled in crooked, clumsily stapled booklets.

Fast forward to present-day, and not much has changed: now an award-winning illustrator, she writes and illustrates children’s book, and contributes to various publications from one side of the globe to the other.
