What’s it all about?

Margaret Atwood is a Canadian poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist and environmental activist. She is most known for her feminist fiction and, in particular, The Handmaid’s Tale.

In this class we will focus on her immensely popular and controversial text, The Handmaid’s Tale. We will use this work to gain a better understanding of the themes and intentions behind her writing.

What will we cover?

In this lesson we will:

  • Explore the history of Atwood’s life and works.
  • Become better acquainted with The Handmaid’s Tale.
  • Explore feminist theory in relation to Atwood’s works.
  • Consider and discuss how these texts relate to today’s society.
