If you visit galleries in Australia and around the world, you will often see prints made by artists using engraved copper or zinc plates.
You can do this at home but with an easy hack – using milk cartons or juice boxes!
In this workshop you will learn how to design an image for printmaking, engrave your milk box plate, ink it, and then make your own limited edition of prints.
What we will cover?
In this online class we will:
- Cover the basics of etching printmaking technique using a milk or juice box
- How to design and compose your image
- Demonstrate a couple of engraving techniques
- How to ink and print with everyday materials you have at home
What will I need?
- For etching:
- An empty and clean milk carton or juice box
- Compass or needle to engrave your milk box
- Box-cutter, blade, or scissors
- Pencil
- Paper – Any thick paper is ok
- For printing:
- Sponges
- Water based paint (ideally gouache) and flour to mix with the paint
- Old or expired plastic cards such as an expired Myki, ID card, library card, etc.
- A rolling pin
Who will be teaching?
Emilie (she/her) is a Melbourne based artist and maker, currently finishing her PhD at the Victorian College of the Arts.
She moved from France and 2014 and has been developing her art practice since, working with a range of media, from video to printmaking and 3D printing.
Emilie is also a comic book artist. Her illustration has been published by The Lifted Brow, and she self-published her first graphic novel in 2018 with Tree Paper Comics in Melbourne.
