What’s it all about?
You don’t have to have a garden plot to grow summer veggies. Learn how to use the no-dig method to grow edibles in any container or on any surface – whether in a pot, on a driveway, over a lawn, or in a salvaged vessel (be it a boot or a bucket!). This is a hands-on workshop where you will build and take home your own small potted-up veggie container.
What we will cover?
This class is suitable for renters, apartment dwellers, and homeowners alike – whether you are new to gardening or already have a green thumb. What we’ll cover:
- Introducing no–dig gardening – what it is, why it’s useful, and where it can be applied.
- The principles for building and maintaining good soil.
- The basics of plant selection and companion planting.
- How to build a no–dig garden.
- Ongoing care and maintenance of your veggies.
You’ll then get the opportunity to put this all into practice and build your own portable veggie patch to take home. Wear clothes you’re happy to get dirty in. If you have a salvaged vessel you’d like to grow something in, bring that along. It just needs to have some drainage and somewhere to catch the drips.
No-dig garden materials will be provided, along with a selection of vegetables and companion herbs and flowers. You’ll also get a a handout describing the method and listing resources if you want to dig (!) deeper.
Who will be teaching?
Michelle Fisher has been gardening for over 20 years, she dabbles with permaculture, did the urban farming course at CERES, and occasionally hosts gardening, fermenting and other workshops out of her home. She organises permaculture outings and activities through Permaculture Out West (POW, part of Permaculture Victoria) and Melbourne Permablitz. When she’s not in the garden, she can be usually found online where she administers the Facebook groups for POW and Transition Town Maribyrnong. She also coordinates the Melbourne Repair Café (Inner West) and welcomes you to check out any and all of the above!
