Come and learn how to create a brand new sustainable and organic material from scratch — Rice clay!

Rice clay can be made into lots of beautiful objects – from bowls, to sculpture pieces and even jewelry! 

Artist Vivian will demonstrate how to mix cooked rice with different fibres to create this unique material as well as the moulding technique to transform it into beautiful pieces of useable art.


What we will cover?

  • The inspiration behind the creation of rice clay
  • How to mix rice with different fibres and materials.
  • How to mould rice clay into sculptures or objects
  • The dehydration process
  • Design ideas 

What will you need?

  • 100g – 200g of cooked medium or short grain rice (must be medium grain)
  • 5 skeins of embroidery floss (preferred material) OR 10-20 sheets of coloured paper/newspaper
  • A small bowl of water
  • Cling film
  • Scissors
  • Dough roller (optional)

Who will be teaching?

Vivian (she/her) is a sentimental jewellery designer. She holds a Bachelor (Honours) degree in Fashion Design from RMIT. 

Her jewellery practice focuses on reflective designing based on emotions, stories, and memories. She explores a variety of non-traditional materials in her practice, including rice fabric created by herself, recycled electrical wires and treated fabric.

Vivian has been running creative hands-on workshops since 2015. She has worked with Signal, City of Melbourne, Geelong Wool Museum, and Immigration Museum.  You can follow her on Instagram.
