Soap is a staple, everyday item, but do we really understand how it’s made and how it works? Let alone how to make good choice about what soap to use – for our skin and for the environment?

In this hands-on class you’ll learn all about the natural chemical reaction that creates soap, what to look for when buying soap, and how to make your own melt & pour soap!

We’ll all make our own soap bars customising them to suit our skin and needs. Need exfoliation? add loofa! Need hydration? add oats! Soap bars are also much more eco-friendly as they have no packaging.

This workshop is suitable for vegans.

What will we cover?

In this hands-on and informative class we will:

  • Make our own melt & pour soap (a kind of fast-tracked soap making process)
  • Choose essential oil fragrances
  • Choose colourings and exfoliants
  • Learn about cold and hot process soap making, and the impacts of the different process
  • Learn about soap-making ingredients, temperatures and safety
  • What to look for when buying soap and making soap

Plus, we will address any of your questions about soap products – what to look for, what to avoid, and different skin types.

Who will be teaching?

Maddy (she/her) is a crafty hobbyist based in Naarm who has a big heart for colour and expression. She enjoys working with all sorts of materials and mediums, and repurposing everyday items into expressions of art and fashion. As a musician, these wonky and not-so-wonky creations often find their way onto stages around Melbourne.

Maddy enjoys carving and printing lino cuts, paper collage, and combining the two. She also enjoys gardening, especially getting her hands dirty! She grew up in regional Victoria where where family home was an Open Garden and commercial nursery.
