What’s it all about?

Have you ever wondered what is actually happening inside your brain when you sleep? Most people think that it gives the brain a chance to rejuvenate… well actually the opposite is true!

Sleep can make or break that exam, presentation or recital we have on the next day. It can determine whether we can remember how to play the piano years from now and it can determine how we react to the stressful environment constantly around us. It is more than just being lazy or switching off at the end of a long day.

Come and join us to discuss all the insights in to what is actually going on at your neural network level (don’t worry, nothing too intense) and how to perform optimally at work/play and get the most out of life.

What will we cover?

We will cover what deep sleep and REM are and how they affect our memories and behaviour in different ways. We will discuss what you need to do to get the best possible sleep “architecture” and discuss why this is important. We will also hook up a volunteer to an EEG and see actual brain activity in real time. Finally, we will break out into groups to discuss some particular sleep questions that may affect a lot of us in our day to day lives and possibly find answers to them.

Who will be teaching?

Fiona Tabart is head sleep scientist at the Epworth Sleep Centre. She has been in the sleep industry for over 10 years and has developed and grown the sleep disorders unit at Epworth Freemasons Hospital for most of that time. Diagnosing and analysing many different sleep disorders is her practice, but it’s what happens to us every time we sleep, the neural connections that are formed and how they are maintained, that she finds truly fascinating.
