What’s it all about?

Melbourne winters call for delicious warming soups, broths and all things comforting, so let’s learn to make a wonderful traditional Dhal lentil soup that is hearty, healthy and simple (& cheap) that can be eaten by itself or with bread.

What will we cover?

This lentil soup is versatile and you can adjust it to your taste and requirements. We will cover the basic ingredients required to make the soup, as well as all the additional things you can add to make your own version of the soup.

What will you need?

This recipe serves two. Please prepare the following ingredients before the class starts.

  • SOUP
    • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
    • 1 medium white onion
    • 1/2 cup red lentils
    • 4-5 cups water or vegetable stock
    • 1 tsp paprika
    • 2 tsp tomato paste
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • TOPPINGS
    • Dried mint / coriander
    • Lemon juice
    • Chilli flakes
  • OPTIONAL ADDITIONS
    • 1/4 white rice
    • Potato, carrot or/and celery
    • Chilli powder
    • Garlic

EQUIPMENT

  • Pot which is deep enough for 6 or more cups of water
  • Chopping board and knife
  • Ladle/stirring spoon
  • Teaspoon and other utensils

Who will be teaching?
