What’s it all about?

We’ve all heard of urban sketching, a lovely art form creating quick rough sketches while on location, walking around the city or parks. It’s more about the essence of the moment and the fun process than a polished end result. Normally these sketches fill notebooks along with comments and thoughts about the places visited and can become a beautiful memory log of our trips. But what to do when you can’t go outside? Let’s all try urban sketching!

Urban sketching series: Each artist has their own unique style, approach and set of skills, so we will be mixing it up with a different featured artist over the coming weeks so you can continue to explore the world of urban sketching with a fresh perspective each time.

This class features artist Nicole, who will share with you her vision of urban sketching, beginning with how to get started sketching. This class is suitable for complete beginners or those who have already started their urban sketching journey. Nicole will guide you through a sketch of your choice, offer suggestions on materials and the different textures and results you can achieve as you enjoy the process of seeing your sketch come to life.

What will we cover?

  • Introduction to sketch art and basics of drawing
  • Tips and tricks for quick sketching
  • Inspiration ideas for daily sketching from your window
  • We’ll all get started on a few sketches to get us going.

What will you need?

  • Notebook or just paper if you prefer
  • Pens or pencils, markers, charcoal etc (whatever you have on hand to draw with)

Who will be teaching?

Nicole Kemp has been involved in teaching art and crafts for over 30 years.  Nicole can be found teaching art to all ages – pre-schoolers, primary and secondary students and to adults at all stages of life. She loves the different challenges that the diverse age groups bring.  She is passionate about providing a safe and friendly environment where people feel free enough to learn the basics of art and can move on to exploring and developing their own ideas.

Nicole loves exploring all areas of creativity from painting, drawing, printmaking and textiles.  She is very inspired by the history of art, her travels, and the movement and colour of cities. She embeds her thoughts and feelings into all her work. Poking around suburban and city laneways provides much enjoyment, and inspiration always comes from graffiti.
