What’s it all about?

The djembe is a West African drum with a versatile sound. It is an essential part of West African culture, and surprisingly easy to learn – you’ll be able to beat to the rhythm right from the beginning.

Mastering the djembe is a whole different story but we’ll learn the basics and have a lot of fun!

What will we cover?

We’ll bring djembes for everyone, and begin with a brief cultural introduction, followed by easy-to-follow rhythms. We’ll learn basic techniques on the djembe (bass, tone and slap), and drum together in unison.

You’ll experience one of the many benefits of playing the djembe – the joy of community music.

Who will be teaching?

After discovering a drum circle in St Kilda on his first week in Australia, Dave was drawn to the sound of the djembe and the obsession began! Dave studied with traditional masters in Ghana in 2010 and continued his apprenticeship in Australia. Dave performs regularly in Oz and Ireland, incorporating his love of African beats into myriad genres of music. He always brings his Irish charm, warmth and a sense of humour to his classes whilst still respecting the traditions and history of its origins. Dave teaches for African Drumming, which you can follow on Facebook and Instagram.
