What’s it all about?
Do you romanticise those images of Christmas carollers wandering from door-to-door in the falling snow singing softly by candlelight? Would you like to sing more confidently at a Christmas carol service?
Singing carols is a fun thing to do in the Christmas season, and singing them in harmony is easy if you are prepared.
What will we cover?
We will teach you three well-known Christmas carols in four-part harmony. Plus, you’ll find out about the history of each carol, so you can sing your way through the Christmas season with confidence, or just enjoy an evening of carol singing during the class!
If you’re not confident in learning parts, you can enjoy singing the well-known melody (no matter how badly or timidly) and revel in the glorious sound of others singing with you in harmony. All ability levels are welcome.
You will:
- Sing “The First Nowell”, “O Come All Ye faithful” and “Joy to the World” in glorious four-part harmony.
- Learn the history of these songs, including why Nowell is spelled so strangely.
- Enjoy being part of a temporary choir.
- Leave feeling ready to carol your way through the Christmas season.
Who will be teaching?
Natalie Sims & Shawn Whelan regularly run shape note classes for Laneway Learning and host monthly Sacred Harp singings in Brunswick. They also love singing Christmas Carols. Both of them grew up singing carols at church, and love singing carols door-to-door, at hospitals, and assisted living centres, or simply with family and friends around the piano or at the pub.
