Watercolour is a wonderful medium to start learning about the basics of colour theory. Get your watercolour set and join this class to learn all about composing a colour palette and mixing your watercolours! 

We’ll work on a couple of illustrations exploring the full spectrum of colour and learn to control the tonal value of your colours for shading and better contrast. 

Whether you are a complete beginner or already play around a bit with watercolour, you’ll expand your skills and understanding of colour in this fun and engaging class.

What will we cover?

Emilie will cover the very basics of colour theory and you’ll get to learn through a hand-on approach all about primary, secondary colours, adjacent and complementary colours as well as creating a beautiful mixing grid of colours.

What will you need?

  • Watercolour set (or any water based paint)
  • Paper (ideally watercolour paper 300GSM, but any thick paper will do)
  • Water and brushes
  • Ppencils, eraser, paper towel, fine liner and any drawing material you have
  • Optional : Masking tape/washi tape, white gelly roll pen (such as Sakura Gelly roll), white gouache, hair dryer

Who will be teaching? 

Emilie (she/her) is a Melbourne based artist and maker who moved from France in 2014.  Her illustrations have been published by the Lifted Brow, and she self-published her first graphic novel in 2018 with Tree Paper Comics in Melbourne.

When she isn’t teaching with Laneway Learning, Emilie works with a range of media, from video to printmaking, 3D printing and a variety of paint mediums. Emilie is currently finishing her PhD at the VCA (Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne).
