What’s it all about?

Ever wondered where your food comes from? In an increasingly globalised world, convenience is the name of the game and there is a growing sense of disconnection between what we eat and how and where it is made. Yet despite this climate of mass production, many small producers choose to go against this grain. So, when shopping for local products, where should we begin and what should we look for?

What will we cover?

Australia is lucky to be home to countless passionate small producers. Mel is acquainted with many of them and their delicious fare – such as olives from one of the oldest olive groves in Australia, honey from rooftops across Melbourne and coffee that is roasted down the road, in Fitzroy and served around the corner in Preston Market! In this class, we’ll learn the histories and philosophies of a handful of these makers, and, of course, sample their products. We’ll also take home some samples with us!

Who will be teaching?

Mel is a passionate local-food enthusiast and owner of Local Pantry Co. at Preston Market. With more than ten years of experience in hospitality, she has worked since 2016 to source the finest and most lovingly made goodies Melburnian and Australian makers have to offer.
